Erectile dysfunction refers to the impaired or absent erection of the penis during sexual arousal. The reason for this can be manifold. It can be psychological or organic. The latter occurs in men as they age, for example, due to a lack of testosterone. Another reason can be the presence of certain risk factors. These are similar to those of heart or vascular diseases, since the penis is an organ that depends on proper blood circulation.
These include, among others:
- Overweight
- Hyperlipidaemia (increased blood content of fats, such as cholesterol)
Smoking - High blood pressure, or disease of the blood vessels
- Sleep apnoea syndrome
- Hormonal disorders (testosterone deficiency)
- Medication
- Drug abuse
The prevalence of erectile dysfunction was estimated at 152 million worldwide in 1995 and is expected to reach 322 million by 2025.
In addition to men who fulfil the risk factors, there are also those who have had to undergo treatment such as radical removal (which is easy on the nerves) and/or radiotherapy due to prostate cancer.
The common therapeutic approaches
The current therapy options for many of the organically caused erectile dysfunctions or those caused by surgery or radiotherapy include a change in lifestyle and, if necessary, the administration of testosterone. Medicinal therapy approaches include the so-called PDE-5 inhibitors, which have been in use since 1998. There are also preparations for use in the urethra or erectile tissue. There is also the possibility of technical aids up to the implantation of a penile prosthesis.
The profound approach of cell therapy
The drug approaches are not always characterized by success and often have many side effects and they are above all short-lived and not with lasting effect, because they do not address the cause.
